Migrants fleeing poverty and bloodshed in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia are dying by the thousands as they cross the Mediterranean Sea to find a better life in Europe.
Though the exact number of deaths is unknown, accounts from survivors rescued at sea suggest that as many as 1,500 people have died trying to cross, making the death toll in 2015 already half as much as it was in all of 2014, when around 3,200 people died.
The following photos, via the International Business Times, provide a small but powerful sample of the desperation, misery, and terror that characterizes the migrant experience. Given the horrific risks and consequences involved, one can only imagine what sort of life these people are fleeing. Fair warning, a few of the images are very disconcerting.
